Problems I fix

  • Flickering or dimming lights. Often a loose connection or a failing circuit, sometimes a sign of something in the panel.
  • Breakers that keep tripping. A breaker trips for a reason. I find what's overloading or faulting the circuit.
  • Dead outlets or partial power. Half a room out, an outlet with no power, a tripped circuit that won't reset.
  • Burning smell or warm outlets and switches. Don't wait on this one. Call and stop using the outlet.
  • Buzzing or warm panel. It may point to a panel that needs upgrading. Worth looking at before it becomes a bigger problem.
  • Outlets and switches. New installs, replacements, GFCI and AFCI upgrades, USB outlets, dedicated circuits for appliances.
  • Mystery circuits. The switch that controls nothing, the circuit no one can trace.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker is doing its job when it trips. It's a safety device interrupting the circuit before something overheats. Resetting it repeatedly without finding out why is how a nuisance becomes a hazard.

There are three common causes, and they need different fixes:

  • Overload. More load on the circuit than it's rated to carry. Common with space heaters, window units, and kitchens where several appliances share one circuit. The fix is usually redistributing the load or adding a dedicated circuit.
  • Short circuit. A hot conductor contacting a neutral or ground, often at a damaged device, a failing appliance, or a compromised cable. This trips hard and immediately.
  • Ground fault. Current escaping the intended path, frequently involving moisture. This is what GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoor areas is built to catch.

An AFCI breaker adds a fourth possibility. These detect arcing, which is a legitimate fire risk, but they can also trip on certain motors and electronics. Telling a real fault from a nuisance trip takes testing, not guessing.

Are flickering lights dangerous?

Sometimes, and the distinction matters.

One fixture flickering is usually contained: a loose bulb, a failing fixture, or an LED and dimmer mismatch. Annoying, rarely urgent.

Lights flickering throughout the house, or dimming whenever a large appliance starts, is a different signal. That pattern can indicate a loose or failing connection upstream, sometimes at the main panel or the service connection itself. A loose neutral in particular can put uneven voltage across the house, which damages electronics and is a genuine fire risk.

The rule I'd give a homeowner: one fixture, get it looked at when convenient. Multiple rooms, or flickering paired with a warm panel, a buzzing sound, or a burning smell, call now and stop using the affected circuits.

Root cause, not a bandaid

A lot of electrical problems get "fixed" by swapping the part that failed without finding why it failed. That's how you end up calling three electricians for the same flickering light.

I diagnose the actual cause. Sometimes that's a five-minute fix: a loose neutral, a bad connection. Sometimes it points to something bigger like a panel that's on its way out. Either way, you'll know what's actually going on and what it'll take to fix it for good.

How I diagnose an electrical problem

Troubleshooting is a process of narrowing down, not a lucky guess. Roughly how it goes:

  • What changed. When did it start, what was running, has anything been added or worked on recently. This alone often points at the circuit.
  • Reproduce it. An intermittent fault is the hard case. If I can make it happen on demand, I can find it.
  • Isolate the circuit. Establish exactly what's affected and what isn't. The boundary between working and not working is usually where the fault lives.
  • Test rather than assume. Voltage, continuity, and load readings at each point along the run.
  • Work back to the source. Devices, then junctions, then the run itself, then the panel.
  • Confirm the fix. Verify under load that the original symptom is actually gone, not just quiet at the moment.

Most residential faults come down to a connection somewhere: a backstabbed outlet that's worked loose, a wire nut that was never tight, a corroded terminal, a damaged cable. They're findable. It just takes going in order instead of replacing parts and hoping.

What to do before I get there

If you're dealing with something that feels urgent, a few things are worth doing right away:

  • Burning smell, scorch marks, or a hot outlet or switch plate. Stop using that circuit. If you can identify the breaker, shut it off. Call me.
  • Buzzing, crackling, or heat at the panel. Don't open the panel. Call.
  • A breaker that won't stay reset. Leave it off. It's telling you something. Repeatedly forcing it back on is the wrong move.
  • Water anywhere near electrical. Keep away from it and kill the circuit if you can do so safely.
  • Any shock, even a small one. That's not normal and it's worth a same-day call.

Anything genuinely on fire or actively arcing is a 911 call first, not an electrician call.

Common faults in older SLO County homes

A lot of the housing stock around San Luis Obispo, Atascadero, and Paso Robles dates to eras with different wiring practices, and certain problems recur.

Ungrounded two-prong circuits, sometimes with three-prong outlets swapped in at some point without an actual ground, which defeats the protection people assume they have. Backstabbed outlets, where conductors were pushed into the back of the device instead of secured under the screw terminal, which loosen over decades and are a leading cause of intermittent faults. Original aluminum branch wiring in some mid-century homes, which needs specific handling at every connection. Missing GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, and exterior outlets. Circuits extended by a previous owner without much regard for load.

None of this means a house is unsafe. It means the wiring reflects when it was installed, and it's worth knowing what you actually have rather than assuming.
